Can You Take Mastic Gum & Probiotics Together?

Short answer: No — don't take mastic gum and probiotics at the exact same time. Mastic has an antibacterial effect, so it can inactivate live probiotic cultures taken together with it. Take probiotics at least 3 hours after mastic. The one exception is a capsule-in-capsule product (Mastic Vital Double Action), which keeps the two separated. Prebiotics, unlike probiotics, combine with mastic perfectly.

Why not take mastic and probiotics at the same time

Mastic gum contributes to the normal function of the digestive system and has an antibacterial action. That is exactly why it doesn't pair well with probiotics taken at the same moment: the live cultures in a probiotic can be inactivated by mastic before they ever reach the gut, so their intake becomes practically useless.

This does not reduce the effect of the mastic. The simple rule:

Rule of thumb: always take probiotics (live cultures) at least 3 hours after mastic — and avoid products that mix mastic and probiotics loosely together.

Prebiotics vs. probiotics with mastic

It's easy to confuse the two, but they behave very differently with mastic:

  • Probiotics = live bacterial cultures. Keep them apart from mastic (3-hour gap).
  • Prebiotics = fibre that feeds your own gut bacteria (e.g. inulin from chicory). These are ideal to combine with mastic — no separation needed.

If you want mastic and prebiotics in one, that's exactly what Mastic+ Prebiotic is for.

The easy solution: capsule-in-capsule

What if you want mastic and live cultures in a single dose, without timing two separate intakes? That's possible thanks to a capsule-in-capsule system, used in Mastic Vital Double Action:

  • the outer capsule holds mastic oil and dissolves in the stomach;
  • the inner capsule passes through the stomach to the intestines, where it dissolves and releases the live cultures.

Because the two components are physically separated and released in different places, the mastic doesn't come into contact with the cultures — so you can take both at once.

Each capsule contains 5 mg of mastic oil, Lactobacillus rhamnosus (3 billion CFU) and Lactobacillus plantarum (2 billion CFU). You can find the full composition on the Mastic Vital product page.
