What Is Mastic Gum Powder?
In short: Mastic gum powder is simply crushed raw Chios resin (Pistacia lentiscus) — a premium aromatic spice and, more commonly, the form encapsulated into food supplements. Here’s what it’s used for and how to grind mastic crystals at home.
What is mastic gum powder?
Mastic gum powder is crushed raw resin. It is highly aromatic, with a strong woody-fruity scent and a distinct ivory-yellow colour. In powdered form it is used as a premium spice in Mediterranean cuisine or, more commonly, encapsulated into food supplements that contribute to the normal function of the digestive system.
How to crush or grind mastic gum
Crucial tip: Always put your mastic crystals in the freezer for 2–3 hours before grinding. As a natural resin, mastic turns sticky when warm; freezing makes it brittle and far easier to powder.
1. Dough roller
Best for medium quantities, no special tools.
- Place frozen crystals on a cutting board.
- Cover tightly with plastic wrap or a bag.
- Roll firmly until all the “tears” are crushed.
2. Mortar & pestle
The traditional way, for a fine, artisanal powder.
- Add a small amount of frozen crystals.
- Grind with a circular motion.
- Work quickly, before the resin warms up.
3. Coffee grinder
The fastest method for larger amounts.
- Pulse in short bursts (5–10 seconds).
- Don’t over-grind — heat makes the mastic stick to the blades.
