Study: MASTIC GUM and IBD
Abstract
Dysregulation of intestinal immune response plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Mastic’s anti-inflammatory properties are well established. Our aim was to investigate Mastic’s regulatory effect on IL-17A serum levels in IBD patients. Alterations of the faecal metabolome as a functional readout of microbial activity were explored. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group design was applied for a total of 3 months in active and 6 months in inactive IBD patients.
Summary
Anti-Inflammatory Effects
Mastic gum has recognized anti-inflammatory properties that can influence immune responses in the gut.
Effects in Inactive IBD
In patients with inactive (quiescent) Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, Mastic influenced IL-17A levels, a key marker linked to gut inflammation.
Metabolic Impact
Mastic also affected gut metabolites, increasing compounds such as glycine and tryptophan, which play a role in supporting healthy immune regulation.
Active Disease
No significant effects were observed in patients with active IBD, indicating benefits may be specific to those in remission.
