ELMA Natural Chewing Gum Without Aspartame and Sugar: Finally, Chewing Without Chemicals
Ondřej DvořákIn short: ELMA is a natural chewing gum made with genuine Chios mastic — most variants are sugar-free and aspartame-free, sweetened with sugar alcohols (xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol) instead. A simpler, more natural everyday gum.
In this article
Most supermarket gums are built on a synthetic base with artificial sweeteners and flavours. ELMA takes a different route: a real natural gum made from genuine Chios mastic.
What "natural, aspartame- and sugar-free" means
For the sugar-free ELMA gums it comes down to a few things:
- no aspartame
- no added sugar
- sweetened with natural sugar alcohols (xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol)
- made with genuine Chios mastic
- natural waxes and gums
Ingredients from the growers
ELMA is produced under the Chios Gum Mastic Growers Association — the people who actually cultivate and process the mastic, not an anonymous factory. A typical sugar-free ELMA lists:
- sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol
- gum base with antioxidant (tocopherol)
- Chios mastic
- glycerin, natural flavours
- gum arabic; carnauba wax, beeswax, shellac
Mastic itself is a natural resin that has been used for centuries; chewing it freshens breath naturally and it's long been part of traditional oral care.
Xylitol vs. aspartame
ELMA's sugar-free gums use xylitol and other sugar alcohols. Here's how they compare, neutrally:
| Property | Xylitol | Aspartame |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Sugar alcohol (polyol) from plant sources | Intense synthetic sweetener |
| Sweetness | Similar to sugar | Far sweeter, used in tiny amounts |
| Teeth | Doesn't feed the bacteria that cause cavities — often called tooth-friendly | No specific dental effect |
| Status | Widely used food ingredient | Approved and considered safe at normal intakes (EFSA) |
ELMA simply chooses sugar alcohols over aspartame — not because aspartame is unsafe, but as a more natural option.
